Opening Remarks
Welcome to Asia Impact Nights 2024! Thank you all for being here.
We often rush decisions without deep thought, yet act slowly when speed is crucial. This is especially true in responding to climate change, pandemic and conflicts.
Asia Impact Nights brings together investors, philanthropists, businesses, and non-profits to boost impact investing in Asia and beyond. This is our 5th event since 2016. Asia Impact Nights is not an initiative of D3 Jubilee Partners alone, but always collaborated with many friends in Korea and overseas, particularly with Toniic, which is a trailblazer in the global impact investing scene.
I would like to express my gratitude to my D3 team, our partners, and sponsors, especially Asan Nanum Foundation and AWS for making this possible.
As we start, I would like to set the tone with two principles which I learned from the Toniic community.
Bring your whole self, not just your job title
Don’t sell, but share your ideas plainly
Everyone's voice matters - we're all here to learn
Last week a Korean writer Han Kang became the first Asian woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her work challenges us to think about what it means to be human. Our world is wealthier than ever. At the same time, we are losing rapidly the abundance we have inherited from our ancestors and nature. The foundation of our civilization is fragile, with elements bound together in a grim cycle. Where should we begin to untenable this thread?
Amadeo Giannini, Founder of Bank of America, said that serving the needs of others is the only legitimate of business today.
Wealth must serve humanity. Otherwise, it may forfeit its mandate to help our lives thrive. We need change, and we know that system change begins with a profound shift in mindset.
Let's use these two days to explore how we can employ our minds and hands to create positive change in Asia and beyond.
